Communities Creating Opportunity (CCO)

COMMUNITY ORGANIZING & ADVOCACY TRAINING SERIES
Are you ready to learn how to activate others to bring about positive social change?
This CCO training series is intended to prepare community residents and leaders to more effectively initiate and sustain engagement with area residents and partners.
The trainings will take place in the Sam Rogers Conference Room at the KC Health Department (2400 Troost) over the course of 8 weeks. Each training is on a Tuesday from 5:30pm-7pm.
At the end of this training series, attendees will be able to:
-Clearly design and articulate the structure and governance of their organization
-Convene, organize, and engage their neighbors around issues that matter to them
-Surface and prioritize community concerns
-Develop advocacy and action plans
-Identify and design productive partnerships
-Clearly communicate the goals and values of their advocacy efforts
DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAININGS
Governance and Leadership:
Participants will understand the basics of board governance and the expectations of leaders. They will also learn to develop and communicate their organization’s vision, mission, and objectives.

Advocacy to Advance Community Concerns:
Participants will be equipped with the advocacy strategies to pursue their action plan. They will learn how to identify advocacy targets, understand self interests, and mobilize residents to demonstrate power.

Surfacing and Prioritizing Community Concerns:
Participants will be trained on consensus building, polling, and dot democracy techniques. Participants will also be trained on the use of a walkability/environment assessment, which they will be asked to complete for their neighborhood.
Leveraging Partnerships to Advance Community Concerns:
Participants will learn how to identify (and approach) individuals and organizations who can serve as effective partners toward community priorities.
Effective Community Engagement Techniques:
Participants will be trained on three community engagement techniques (community canvass, town hall, and focus groups).
Making Your Case: Finding and Effectively Using Publicly Available Information:
Participants will learn to discern between good and poor sources of information, and will learn about the best methods of conveying information to various audiences.
Community Action Planning:
Participants will learn how to develop a community action plan that includes action items, strategies, tactics, and timelines.
Developing a Social Marketing Campaign:
Participants will learn how to develop clear campaign messages and marketing materials, and to leverage the power of social media to advance their advocacy campaigns.
