William Morris — influential artist, novelist, poet and socialist activist of Victorian Britain — penned two time-travel narratives: “A Dream of John Ball” and “News from Nowhere.” Fusing Marxism, late 19th century romance and science fiction, Morris’s works provide a utopian socialist take on government during a reforming period of Britain’s empire that increased political democracy on its constitutional monarchy. Join us as Professor Tom Prasch navigates Morris’s seemingly fictitious worlds of the past and the parallels of their posited futures with our current times. Tom Prasch is a professor and chairs the history department at Washburn University. He received his Ph.D. in history from Indiana University. His research specialties include Victorian England and film history. Tom has published widely in his field and has presented numerous papers at academic conferences. He has served as a guest speaker for Topeka area organizations, and writes and comments on contemporary film. Q&A following the lecture. Light refreshments served.
