I'm so excited to teach an art form very dear to my heart. HoopDance. This workshop is for those who have been hooping for a while as well as those who have never picked up a hoop before. In this hour, we will focus on the fundamentals of HoopDance ~ hooping on the waist while walking, turning and dancing with beautiful posture and grace. From there we will go deeper, learning a variety of on and off-the-body moves to add to your practice. My goal is to give you lots to play with as you develop your own unique HoopDance style. I provide the hoops. Wear something comfortable. Yoga-type clothing is ideal. And don't forget to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
A little background on my personal hoop journey:
I discovered hooping in 2008 at a warehouse party in Oakland and became completely enchanated by it (okay, obsessed). I practiced daily for months with a small toy hoop from Target, not realizing there was a big hoop movement happening in the L.A. and San Francisco scene with dancers developing new and exciting hoop tricks. I began taking classes from the top HoopDancers in the bay, and as I got better, people kept asking if I taught, so I started teaching in the backyard of my home weekly, then later at a few California Vineyards and studios in Oakland, Berkely and San Francisco. I eventually joined a performance troupe called HoopGirl and performed at events and professional nightclubs for several years. The hoop has been a tool in my life that has brought me back to my passion of dancing and has evolved my movement skills again and again. It is my pleasure to keep teaching something that has transformed by life so profoundly.
