Opening July 21st PLUG Projects presents, The Rugmaker’s Daughter, a solo exhibition that explores identity, care and labor by Lexie Abra Johnson. Johnson uses traditional textile processes to examine her own family structure and her place within it. Working with clothing discarded by friends and family, she carefully deconstructs and reconstructs the material by sewing and weaving it back together. Her collected textiles are fraught with history and meaning, retaining fragments of the people who used them. Piecing together snippets of their histories, Johnson composes abstract portraits of those she has loved, loves, and those who have been lost somewhere in between.
