Opening July 21st at PLUG Projects, Open Fracture presents the work of Benjamin Rosenthal and Catalina Ouyang. These artists consider the fractured body through video, performance, sculpture, and drawing. Connecting historical precedents of idealized bodies with a digitized present, Rosenthal and Ouyang complicate material conventions and traditional narratives. Acknowledging their own complicity in the structures that surround human sexuality, engagement and vulnerability, simple gestures become loaded symbols of power, passivity, and intimacy. Placed in conversation with one another, Rosenthal and Ouyang suggest that it is by engaging the vitality of others that we begin to understand ourselves.
