Thomas Hart Benton was Missouri's most famous painter. He was born in the Ozarks, in Neosho, in 1889. As a child, and later as an adult, he often floated the Ozarks' rivers and walked its hills and valleys. He produced many paintings of the landscape and the people. He also wrote extensively about the Ozarks, sharing stories of his experiences in the region and describing how the isolation of the residents there in the 1930s produced a unique character. Also shown will be several clips from the 1971 EPA documentary A Man and a River, which focused on Benton's float trip on the Buffalo River.
