Americans have the highest rates of depression and anxiety in the developed world. Chances are, you will experience one or both of these in your lifetime. It is normal to have an episode here and there. However, many of us, have a pervasive problem that invades our lives and robs us of happiness and serenity. Anxiety can prevent you from doing things you enjoy and at its extreme, can prevent you from living the life of your dreams. Depression can cloud your world enough to change the very way you perceive it. One way to get in front of these disorders is to use Mindfulness (the technique of total mental awareness) and Meditation (tuning into the body’s relaxation response). These techniques train the brain to be conscious of all thoughts and help to aid in stopping the spiral that brings you to the fight or flight stage, or helps you carve out an abyss of despair. In addition, they help to manage the way you react to episodes or even prevent further ones. In our time together, we will exercise our minds through meditation and total thought consciousness. We will also break all barriers in talking about this subject openly and with a sense of humor.
